Mariners Drop Last Road Game of the Season to Ave Maria

AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Coastal Georgia volleyball team (10-17(2-11)) lost its last regular season road game to Ave Maria (18-5(10-3)) 3-0 on Thursday, Nov. 3.

The Mariners were led offensively by Sydney Martin who recorded 13 kills while hitting .346 percent.

Freshmen Paula Perez Rosales and Chantiya Johnson combined for 11 kills and Perez Rosales led the team in digs with 14. Setter Rebecca Brown facilitated 25 assists through the three-set match.

For the Gyrenes, Abigail Costlow, Cabriella Bouterse and Zelie Kessler all recorded double-digit kills. Kessler led the pack, however, with 13 and hit .417 percent in the game.

Madelyn Haut recorded eight kills and three blocks while hitting a game-high .571 percent. Setter Lily Wikoski recorded 41 assists and also added a pair of blocks.

How It Happened:

SET 1: The Gyrenes wasted no time showing why they are the No. 2 team in the Sun Conference. After a 3-3 tie, Ave Maria went on a 7-2 run to take a 10-5 lead which they would not let up as they took the set 25-14 to take a 1-0 lead.

SET 2: The Mariners came out strong in the second set and led 10-9 before a quick 5-1 Gyrenes run would give Ave Maria a 14-11 lead. The Mariners brought it back within two at the 16-14 mark but a late 7-2 run would put the set out of reach as the Gyrenes took the second set 25-19 to take a 2-0 lead.

SET 3: The Gyrenes jumped out to a 7-2 lead before Coastal Georgia brought the game back within four at the 11-7 mark. However, Ave Maria put their foot on the gas and exploded for a 9-1 run to put the game at 20-8. They would close out the set 25-13 to take the 3-0 win and improve to 10-3 in conference play.

The Mariners will host Keiser on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 2 pm in the Coffin Gym. Coastal Georgia will be honoring its lone senior Skylar Gribben before the game.
