Mariners Leave it all on the Court in Final Game of the Season

BRUNSWICK, Ga.- The Coastal Georgia volleyball team (10-18(2-12)) concluded its season with a 3-1 loss to Keiser University (30-7(10-4)) on Saturday. The Mariners hung tough the entire game and did not make it easy on the Seahawks.

Sydney Martin led the way offensively with 13 kills while hitting an impressive .357 percent for the game. Freshmen Celina Keener and Chantiya Johnson put an exclamation point on the end of their first collegiate season combing for 15 kills and 12 of the team's 24 blocks. Keener and Johnson also hit over .250 percent for the game.

Paula Perez Rosales recorded eight kills and nine digs while setter Rebecca Brown dished out 33 assists while also having seven digs. 

The Seahawk's offense was led by Brooklynn Slater and Cameron Estep who combined for 35 of the team's 59 kills. Cassie Cox also ended with double-digit kills, recording 10 and setter Hannah Heide turned in another big assist game recording 47.

How It Happened:

SET 1: The Mariners jumped out to an early 7-4 in the first set before Keiser tied the game at 7-7. After a few more ties, Keiser broke through for its first lead of the set at 11-10. From there, the Seahawks opened up an 11-4 and forced the Mariners to take a timeout. Out of the break, Keiser had no trouble closing out the set and took it 25-16 to take a 1-0 lead.

SET 2: This time Keiser got out to an early lead. They went up 5-1 before the Mariners came back and tied it up at 5-5. The set was back and forth until Coastal Georgia went on a 9-3 run to take a 23-16 lead late in the set. Keiser did not back down, however, and brought the set within one point before the Mariners closed it out 25-23 to tie the game at 1-1.

SET 3: Neither team controlled the set early. Keiser held a 14-13 lead before going on an 11-4 run to take the set 25-17 and retake the lead in the game at 2-1. 

SET 4: Keiser's run at the end of set three rolled over into the beginning of the fourth set. They took an 8-5 lead before Coastal Georgia came back and took the lead after a 5-1 run. At the 13-12 mark, the Mariners recorded back-to-back-to-back blocks to take a 15-13 lead thanks to Chantiya Johnson, Paula Perez Rosales and Sydney Martin. However, Keiser refused to lie down and retook the lead at the 19-17 mark. The Seahawks finished the game on a 6-2 run to grab their 30th win of the season. 

Mariner's Season in Review:

  • Rebecca Brown's 585 assists season gives her 992 career assists as a Mariner and pushes her up to fourth in school history.
  • Sydney Martin also broke into the school record book after finishing the season with 63 blocks to give her 131 career blocks. This puts her at ninth in school history. 
  • Paula Perez Rosales finished her impressive freshman campaign with 275 kills, 278 digs and nine double-doubles.
  • Chantiya Johnson also impressed in her first collegiate season, recording a team-high 79 blocks which ranks top 10 in school history for a single season. 
  • Celina Keener ended her season strong and finished with 36 blocks in just 18 games. 
  • Natalia Willhelm Heguaburu was a swiss army knife for the Mariners all season. She came into Coastal Georgia as a middle blocker but played more libero this season. She was the ultimate team player, doing and playing any position on the court to try and help her team win. 
  • Elena Gkiourda recorded the third most digs on the team with 175 and also recorded the fourth most points on the team with 116.5.
  • Thamely Santos ended her season with 61 kills and 100 digs while adding 24 blocks.
