Mariners Split Day One With Gyrenes

AVE MARIA, Fla. – The No. 10 Coastal Georgia Mariners (28-4, 11-3) split with the Ave Maria Gyerenes (18-18, 8-6) on day one of the two-day series. The Mariners lost 9-2 in the first game and won 9-4 in the second.

Game One Batting:

Game Two Pitching:

  • Dickerson got the start and pitched 4.0 innings. She allowed six runs off seven hits. Only five of the runs were earned. She walked one and struck out five.
  • Elizabeth McGovern allowed one run and one hit after facing two batters.
  • Sydney Morris finished the last 2.0 innings of the game. She allowed four hits and two Gyrene runs. She struck out two batters.

Game One Recap:

The Gyrenes got on the board in the bottom of the first. They scored their first two runs off of three hits and the Mariners left two on base. They tacked on a third run in the sixth off of two hits. They had a 3-0 lead after the first three innings.

The Gyrene's offense opened up in the fifth. They scored four runs off three hits and a Mariner error.

Coastal Georgia put their two runs up in the top of the sixth. Wood started the inning off with a single and Gabi Merced pinch ran for her. Dickerson singled and moved Merced to second. Merced was out on a fielder's choice from Rhodes leaving two base runners still on. Thinger loaded the bases with an infield single. Jones drew a walk to score Dickerson and Maret was hit by a pitch to score Rhodes. The Mariners were down 7-2 after the top of the sixth.

Ave Maria tacked on two more to take a 9-2 lead which they held onto through the seventh for the victory over the 10th ranked Mariners. 

Game Two Batting:

  • Maret and Jones had a phenomenal game two. They each hit 3-4 at the plate. Jones recorded two runs and two RBI. Maret had one of each.
  • Cevanna Wood totaled two RBI.
  • Thinger and Rhodes both hit a double.

Game Two Pitching:

  • Reagan Thomas pitched a complete-game win in game two of the doubleheader with Ave Maria. She allowed 12 hits but only four runs crossed the plate. She walked one batter and struck out 24. She threw 93 pitches in the game, 67 were strikes. This was Thomas's fourth win for the Mariners and second complete game. 

Game Two Recap:

Ave Maria got on the board first in game two, in the bottom of the first. They scored one run off two hits.

Coastal Georgia scored two runs off five hits in the top of the third to take the lead in game two. Rhodes singled to start the inning. She stole second and then advanced to third on a single from Sydney Morris. On a single from Jones, Rhodes scored. The Mariners had tied the game for the first time in the series. They scored their second run of the inning when Rowell singled to score Jones. Coastal Georgia led 2-1.

Coastal Georgia flexed their offense in the top of the fourth. Dickerson started the inning with a single to shortstop. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a double from Rhodes. Rhodes would go on to score off a double from Thinger, and Thinger scored off a single from Jones, making the game 5-1. Coastal Georgia added one more run one Jones scored off a Maret single.

Ave Maria added an additional run in the bottom of the fourth, making it a 6-2 game in favor of the Mariners. Ave Maria attempted a comeback in the sixth inning, adding an additional two runs, making the game a tight 6-4.

Coastal Georgia secured the win in the top of the seventh with three additional runs. With back-to-back singles from Maret and Kagee and a walk from Rowel, the Mariners loaded the bases. Dickerson walked scoring the seventh Mariner. Two more came in when Wood hit a single down the third baseline. The Mariners took a 9-4 lead which they held on through the rest of the game.
