Mariners Aim for First Conference Win Against Gyrenes

BRUNSWICK, Ga.- The Coastal Georgia volleyball team (3-5, 0-1) will travel to Ave Maria, Fla. to take on Ave Maria University on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 2 p.m.

The Mariners are coming off a 3-1 loss to SUN opponent Southeastern University in a match where they led in virtually every statistical category but were hurt by errors.

The Gyrenes (5-6, 1-0) on the other hand, are coming off a decisive 3-0 win against Warner University on Wednesday night.

HISTORY-

Ave Maria has won its last eight matches against Coastal Georgia and lead the series 9-7 after going 1-7 in the first eight matches between them. The Gyrenes took both matches by a combined score of 6-1 last year and have only lost three sets in the past eight matches against the Mariners.

BY THE NUMBERS-

The Mariners are currently second in the Sun Conference for blocks per set with 1.8 while the Gyrenes are the best in the SUN at limiting opponents blocks as they allow just 1.36 blocks per set. The battle at the net will be one to watch.

QUICK HITS-

Sophomore Chantiya Johnson leads the team with .79 blocks per set which is also good for third-best in the SUN.
Raevyn Russell's points per set (3.38) and kills per set (3.03) both rank fourth in the SUN for their respective categories.
Few players have been more efficient than Cassidy Casey who is fifth in the SUN with a .257 hitting percentage.
Julia Neveu and Jenna Rogers have held down the back line this season as they have combined for 5.71 digs per set.
