BRUNSWICK, Ga. - For the fourth consecutive year, the Coastal Georgia softball team is headed to the opening round of the NAIA national tournament, heading to Williamsburg, KY to compete for a spot in the World Series.
The Mariners (36-12) come in on a bit of a rough patch, having lost their previous two matchups, both in the Sun Conference tournament two weeks ago. Now two time SUN Player of the Year Bryce Peacock and SUN Freshman of the Year Rylee Mills will look to lead their team in the first round, and punch the Mariners ticket to Columbus for the first time in program history.
While Peacock and Mills have been the backbone of this young Mariners squad all season long, Rori Rhodes, Rily Andrews, and many others have stepped up and become vital pieces to the lineup in the late season. Rhodes went 4-9 during the conference tournament with a run scored and a pair of RBI's, while Andrews went 3-9 with a double and a pair of RBI's as well.
In order for the Mariners to advance in the national tournament, they will have to play stellar defense and pitch better than they have all season long. CCGA allowed eight runs during their three conference tournament games, and only allowed two each to St. Thomas and Southeastern in the final two.
For the Ravens (39-14), they come into the national tournament having lost to Central Methodist twice in the Heart Conference Championship game earning a number two seed in the bracket. Clare Heitz has played all 53 games for the Ravens making 52 starts and leads the team in batting average at .420. Kassidy James and Bailey Knorr aren't far behind, hitting .345 and .340 respectively. Their .310 team isn't anything to play around with as they can be dangerous at the plate. The Ravens do not slow down defensively, pitching to the tune of a 2.34 team ERA with Bailey Selvage leading the way with a 1.40 ERA. She has started 25 games going the distance 18 times, allowing just 33 earned runs over 164.2 innings.
First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. from the UC Softball Complex.
