BRUNSWICK, Ga. - After a week off, the College of Coastal Georgia women's basketball team returns to action this weekend as they travel to Babson Park, Fla. to match up with the Webber Warriors in Sun Conference action.
Both the Mariners (8-6, 1-5 SUN) and the Warriors (4-10, 1-5 SUN) have struggled in Sun Conference action this season as both have won just one conference game. Both teams are still in the mix for the final seed in the Sun Conference tournament later this season, but both need to beat the other twice in order to have a chance at the spot.
The Mariners come in following a 77-58 road loss to the then unbeaten Florida Memorial Lions in Miami Gardens last Saturday afternoon and are looking to bounce back for their first conference road win in over a year. Peyton Shafer and Morgon Webb both led the offense scoring 17 a piece, while Shafer added four steals to bring her season total up to 37, which is seven away from 10th all time in school history for a single season. While Shafer has been a constant all season long, so has Webb who continues to lead the Mariners in points, averaging 12.1 on the season which ranks 10th in the conference.
While the defense has been solid all season long, the offense has struggled most of the season, leading to the 1-5 record in conference play. The Mariners rank seventh in the conference in total offense while ranking dead last in three pointers made and three point field goal percentage, numbers that need to change if CCGA wants to make a run at the tournament.
The Warriors come in dropping their last contest to New College of Florida on Wednesday night by a final score of 49-33. Webber had just five players score in the 16 point loss, with Renae Brant leading the team in scoring with 10. The Warriors also rank low in the conference in most offensive categories, ranking eighth in points per game and last in field goal percentage. When needed, they can shoot the three pointer, ranking seventh in three pointers made on the season while holding their opponents to shooting just 27 percent from behind the arc, fourth best in the conference. Jaiden Ross leads the team in scoring on the season with 13.1 PPG followed by J. Curry with 11.6 PPG.
This will be the 21st meeting between the two schools, with CCGA holding a slight 11-9 series lead. Webber has held the upper hand in the series since 2022, winning seven of the last eight matchups.
Tip off is set for 2:00 p.m. from the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
