The College of Coastal Georgia women's volleyball team dropped a four-set match Saturday morning to Augusta State at Howard Coffin Gym. The Mariners lost the first set 25-18 but won the second set 25-17 to tie the match. However, the Jaguars won a close third set 25-21 then finished off Coastal Georgia with a 25-16 victory in the fourth set to claim the overall win.
The loss left the Mariners with a 14-14 record in their inaugural season which is winding down. The team will play back-to-back home matches this Friday and Saturday before closing the season with a pair of away matches at Brewton Parker and Augusta State. Coastal Georgia will host Webber International Friday at 6 p.m. and will welcome Warner to Howard Coffin for a 2 p.m. contest on Saturday. The Mariners go to Brewton Parker on Nov. 7 and visit Augusta State the next night to close out their debut campaign.
Augusta State, an NCAA Division II program which competes in the Peach Belt Conference, improved to 14-15 on the year with Saturday's win. The Jaguars came into Saturday's match following a 3-0 loss to conference foe Flagler Friday night in St. Augustine, Fla. After playing the Mariners, they quickly boarded their team bus for Savannah, where they were scheduled to take on Armstrong Atlantic on Saturday afternoon.
In the loss, the Mariners had several individuals who put up strong numbers. Valerie Cutrone led the squad with 15 kills while Amanda Kline totaled 12 and team kills leader Holly Hammer knocked down 11. Al Aplington, meantime, just missed twin figures in kills with nine. Aplington shared the setting duties with Maggie Bee and the duo combined for 48 assists. Bee was credited with 26 and Aplington recorded 22.
On the defensive side, Hammer notched a whopping 44 receptions and made just three errors. She also finished with 12 digs to earn another double-double performance. Kansas Robison led the Mariners with 14 digs.
The Mariners finished with 54 kills while the Jaguars recorded 43, but Coastal Georgia also committed 29 attack errors to just 15 by Augusta State.
The loss dropped Coastal Georgia to 4-3 on its home floor this season.
