Mariners get split in Saturday matches

Babson Park, Fla. – The College of Coastal Georgia earned a split Saturday in a pair of matches at the Webber International Tri-Match.

The Mariners fell to host Webber in their opening match on the day, falling in five sets by 20-25, 25-23, 13-25, 26-24, 13-15. Coastal Georgia came back to take its second match against Warner University, winning in four sets by 15-25, 27-25, 25-21, 25-23.

The victory over Warner was the first of the season for the Mariners who opened the 2012 campaign with a 3-1 loss at sixth-ranked Embry-Riddle University on Friday night in Daytona Beach, Fla.

"If we continue to add consistency every match, then we will be where we need to be come November," said Coastal Georgia coach Jeff Huebner, alluding to the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament, which will be the first-ever postseason tournament for the team.

This is just the second season for the Mariners, who played for the first time last fall and finished with a 15-17 record in their debut season. Coastal Georgia was not eligible for postseason play a year ago as a first-year member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Sophomore Holly Hammer led the Mariners in both matches on Saturday with 17 and 16 kills, respectively. Last season, she was the Mariners' season kills leader and is supposed to primarily be a setter this season.

Junior setter Maggie Bee, the team's assist and aces leader last season, was good in both areas on Saturday as she recorded 36 assists and had nine aces in the doubleheader.

Freshman Cassidy Kingery led the Mariners with 24 digs in the loss to Webber, who was playing its season opener. Kansas Robison, who has been hampered while recovering from an injury since starting preseason camp, led Coastal Georgia with 23 digs in the win against Warner, who also was playing its first match of the season.

Freshman Kara Neisen shined in the second set against Warner with 5 kills and four blocks.

Senior Joy Ogide and sophomore Amanda Kline had three blocks each in the victory.

Coastal Georgia will see both of these teams again at the Faulkner Invitational in two weeks.

The Mariners return home for their home opener on Tuesday against Florida State College-Jacksonville. Match time is 6:30 p.m. at Howard Coffin Gym.
