Mariners topple Florida State College-Jacksonville in home opener

Brunswick, Ga. – The College of Coastal Georgia women's volleyball team won its home opener Tuesday night at Howard Coffin Gym, defeating Florida State College-Jacksonville by a 3-1 count.

The Mariners won the first set 25-19, but dropped the second set 25-13. They regained control of the match with a 25-11 third-set victory and put away the Blue Wave with a 25-19 victory in the fourth set.

A crowd of 468 turned out for the match. As part of the campus-wide Spirit Series coordinated by the Student Life office, Coastal Georgia students received white Coastal Georgia athletics t-shirts for an advertised "White Out" in the stands.

Fans also received Coastal Georgia volleyball schedule cards and posters as they entered the door. The schedule cards and posters will again be available for Wednesday's 7 p.m. match against Montreat (N.C.) College, which also is an NAIA school. General admission is $3. Coastal Georgia students, faculty and staff are admitted free with their college I.D.

The win was the first for the Mariners in a home opener. They lost their home opener last season against Southeastern University when volleyball made its first appearance on the Coastal Georgia campus.

Tuesday's victory evened the Mariners' record at 2-2 for the season. They opened their second season last weekend with three road matches in Florida.

In the victory over FSCJ, Lindsay Herman, a junior college All-American last season at Illinois Central, continued her stellar early play with a team-high 15 kills in 30 total attacks. She made just three errors in 30 swings and had a .400 hitting percentage for the match. Freshman Kara Neisen had nine kills for the Mariners while sophomore Holly Hammer had eight.

Junior Maggie Bee and Hammer combined for 37 assists as they set up the Coastal Georgia attack. Bee finished with 25 assists while Hammer contributed 12.

The Mariners also got strong play at the net from freshman MK White who totaled seven block assists in the victory. Hammer finished with five and senior Joy Ogide recorded four.

Rebecca Redgen led the Blue Wave with 14 kills in defeat and Savannah Young added 10.
