Brunswick, Ga. – The College of Coastal Georgia women's volleyball team closed out a perfect home stand with a 3-0 victory on Saturday afternoon over Brenau University at Howard Coffin Gym.
The win was the fifth in a row for the Mariners (12-5), who have won all of the matches in this current winning streak by 3-0 scores. Coastal Georgia also improved to 3-0 in the Southern States Athletic Conference with the win over the Golden Tigers. The Mariners defeated Brewton-Parker on Tuesday at home to open conference play before rolling past Faulkner on Friday night and then defeating Brenau on Saturday to complete the week.
In Saturday's match against the Tigers, the Mariners continued to showcase a potent offensive attack as they recorded 56 kills to again break the team record for kills in a three-set match. On Friday against Faulkner, the Mariners totaled 50 kills to set a new high mark.
Also on Saturday, the Mariners terminated the ball 22 times in the third set which they won 30-28 and the 22 kills also is a new team-high total for a set. The Mariners broke the single-set record for kills for the third time in a week. They established a new record with 18 kills in a set last Saturday against Tocca Falls, and on Friday night the Mariners posted 19 kills in two of the three sets against Faulkner.
Against Brenau (5-5 overall, 4-2 conference), the Mariners again recorded 19 kills in the opening set which they won 25-15 before getting 15 kills in the second set which they won 25-14.
In Saturday's victory, Kara Neisen led the Mariners with a season-high 17 kills in 34 attacks and hit .412 for the match. Holly Hammer and Amanda Kline both added 10 kills each while Joy Ogide and Allie Shannon contributed nine and eight kills, respectively, to give the Mariners good overall balance.
Cayley Meiners was once again on point for the Mariners as the team's primary setter. The freshman notched 40 assists in the victory a dau after recording a season-high 41 assists against Faulkner.
Defensively, the Mariners allowed just 28 kills by the Tigers, who hit just .154 for the match.
Kansas Robison led the Mariners with 16 digs while Maggie Bee finished with 11. Hammer and Neisen both had eight apiece.
Ellen Lemos, last week's SSAC Player of the Week, led the Tigers in defeat with nine kills.
Coastal Georgia will now prepare for its first weekend road trip in the conference with matches on Friday and Saturday in Mobile, Ala. The Mariners face Spring Hill, last year's conference runner-up on Friday, before playing at Mobile on Saturday.
