Mariners finish out perfect weekend

Montreat, N.C. – The College of Coastal Georgia women's volleyball team finished off a perfect weekend in the Volley in the Mountains tournament with two more wins on Saturday.

The Mariners toppled both Point Park (Pa.) and Webber International by 3-0 scores to cap the weekend with a 4-0 record while playing just the minimum 12 sets over the four matches.

Coastal Georgia also defeated tournament host Montreat College and No. 10-ranked Lindsey Wilson in three sets on Friday in its first two matches of the season.

"On the weekend, it was exciting to go perfect," said Coastal Georgia coach Jeff Huebner. "The tournament was a good one with Point Park and Lindsey Wilson. We got some great feedback from those coaches who feel we should be ranked in the top 15."

On Saturday, the Mariners defeated Point Park by 25-23, 25-19, 25-19 before getting by Webber 25-16, 26-24, 27-25.

"Today was a good way to finish as outright winners of the tournament," Huebner added. "Our match against Point Park started a bit slow, but we recovered and played clean the rest of the way.

"The last match, Webber played well and we struggled blocking for a good portion of the match. Jessica Fujimoto changed the match with her serve in sets two and three. Our kids showed some great mental fortitude being down in both sets and coming back to win."

Against Point Park, Kara Neisen led the Mariners with 14 kills. Cayley Meiners posted 41 assists.Neisen also had 18 digs to top the team while Jennifer Johnson followed with 15.

Against Webber, Bounds again shined, hammering home 17 kills in 22 attempts.  Amanda Kline added nine kills and Holly Hammer finished with eight.

Meiners recorded 41 assists in the win. Johnson led the team with 11 digs, Neisen followed with nine and Josie Corbett recorded seven.

"I was especially impressed by the play of Jen and Maddie," Huebner said. "They were some of our most consistent players. Kansas Robison was phenomenal in serve receive for us and as a communicator. Cayley also had a great weekend. Her ability to set away from her movement clearly made her the best setter in the gym."

The Mariners will be at home next weekend to host the second Mariner Invitational. They play twice on Friday and twice more on Saturday with several other schools coming to compete in the event at Howard Coffin Gym.
