Mariners ease by Bethel, 3-0

Brunswick, Ga. – The College of Coastal Georgia women's volleyball team made quick work of Bethel Friday night, cruising to another 3-0 victory in the Southern States Athletic Conference matchup at Howard Coffin Gym.

The No. 23-ranked Mariners (16-0 overall, 8-0 SSAC) won by scores of 25-16, 25-12, 25-13 to continue the team's longest-ever winning streak while remaining unbeaten for the season.

The Wildcats dropped to 8-7 overall and 4-2 in the conference with the loss.

Coastal Georgia displayed a strong defensive performance at the net in the victory, recording 16 total blocks which is a team record for a three-set match. The Mariners totaled 24 block assists and four solo blocks for the night.

Freshman middle blocker Maddie Bounds recorded eight individual block assists which is a new Coastal Georgia individual record for a match. She also posted two solo blocks. Rachel Amundson and Emma Anderson also had solo blocks for Coastal Georgia.

"We blocked really well," said Coastal Georgia coach Jeff Huebner. "We've spent a lot of time on that in the last month, and almost everyone who played in the front row had a block, and that was impressive to me.

"That makes playing defense really simple which is why our dig totals were low tonight."

Coastal Georgia finished with 45 digs with Jennifer Johnson getting a team-best 13.

The Mariners allowed just 25 kills by the Wildcats in 93 total swings.

The Mariners finished with 37 kills in 85 attacks and hit .341 for the match. They made just eight errors.

Bounds and Anderson paced a balanced offensive effort with nine kills apiece while Allie Shannon followed closely with eight.

Cayley Meiners recorded 31 assists.

"We worked hard in practice this week and really went back to basics, and everything was pretty clean tonight, so it was exciting to see the kids play like they did," Huebner noted.

"It was also exciting to see (local player) Emily Reynolds (from Glynn Academy) get in tonight and see how excited our team was for her. She works hard in practice every day and really does a good job of keeping our gym competitive on a daily basis."

The Mariners are back in action at 2 p.m. on Saturday against Martin Methodist. A tailgate cookout will be held right outside Coffin Gym starting at 11 a.m. The event is part of Family and Alumni Weekend on campus which kicked off on Friday.

Also prior to Friday's match, a ceremony was held to honor the Coastal Georgia golf teams for their 2014 championship seasons. The women won the school's first SSAC championship while the men won the NAIA national crown for the college's first-ever national championship in any sport. Both teams were presented with their own individual championship rings during the ceremony.
