Mariners blank Brenau

Brunswick, Ga. - The College of Coastal Georgia women's volleyball team picked up its second Southern States Athletic Conference win over Brena this season as it downed the Golden Tigers 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Howard Coffin Gym.

Coastal Georgia also defeated Brenau 3-0 in their earlier meeting this season in Gainesville. With Saturday's victory, the No. 21 Mariners ran their record to 22-3 overall and 13-1 in the conference.

Coastal Georgia has a two-game lead over Mobile in the SSAC standings and now needs to win one of two matches next weekend to claim its second consecutive outright regular-season league title. The Mariners close out the season with home dates against Bethel on Friday and Martin Methodist on Saturday.

Brenau fell to 10-18 and 4-10 with Saturday's setback.

"Today we played better, and our offense looked as high-power as it has all season," said Coastal Georgia coach Jeff Huebner. "We have been working on a lot of really specific details and this week it has certainly started to take form. We have seven  days to put in work, and wrap up conference and honor our seniors and I think we are certainly headed in the right direction, building up momentum for the national tournament."

On Saturday, the Mariners totaled 44 kills on 90 swings against eight errors to hit an even .400 for the match. Kyra White led the squad with 10 kills in 20 attacks while Regan Coughlin followed with nine kills in 18 attempts.

Cayley Meiners recorded 33 assists for the Mariners.

Defensively, the Mariners checked Brenau to just 22 kills The Tigers had 18 errors in 91 attacks and hit just .044 for the contest.

The Mariners finished with 52 digs and eight total blocks as part of a strong defensive showing. Kara Neisen led the team with 12 digs while Alyssa Keeve recorded 10.

White totaled a solo block and four block assists for the Mariners. Allie Shannon, Coughlin and Neisen all had three assisted blocks as well.

Saturday's Halloweeen afternoon match also was Coastal Georgia's "Dig Pink" match. The team wore pink jerseys to help raise awareness for breast cancer.
