Mariners power past Brewton-Parker

Brunswick, Ga. – The College of Coastal Georgia women's volleyball team took care of business Saturday afternoon, clicking to a 3-0 victory over Brewton-Parker at Howard Coffin Gym.

The Mariners were coming off a 3-0 victory Friday at Middle Georgia as they returned to action for the first time after a long layoff.

Coastal Georgia and Brewton-Parker were originally scheduled to play Thursday, but the match was delayed until Saturday to give the Mariners more time to settle back in after Hurricane Matthew shut down the college for a whole week until the campus residence halls opened back up for students on Wednesday with classes resuming Thursday morning.

With Saturday's victory, which came by scores of 25-10, 25-9 and 25-9, the Mariners ran their season record to 18-5 while also going to 11-1 in the Southern States Athletic Conference to remain tied for the league lead with Mobile.

The Barons remain winless for the season at 0-15 overall and 0-11 in league games.

Coastal Georgia mounted an efficient offense throughout Saturday's match with 41 kills in 76 total swings to hit .474 over the three sets. Every Coastal Georgia offensive player tallied at least one kill as senior Allie Shannon paced the assault with 10 kills in 17 attacks without committing a hitting error.

The Mariners also got seven kills from senior setter Cayley Meiners and seven from freshman middle blocker Jessica Brown who shined off the bench in the win. Also for Coastal Georgia, Alexis Downey, Kayla Gadberry and Rachel Amundson all registered five kills apiece.

Meiners posted assists on 31 of the Mariners' 41 kills.

Coastal Georgia also posted 10 aces in the three sets. If there was a negative offensively, it was the five service errors committed by the Mariners.

The Barons struggled offensively, meantime, as they could muster only 10 kills for the match in 63 attempts.

For Coastal Georgia, Alyssa Keeve and Jennifer Johnson sparkled defensively, recording 16 and 11 digs, respectively. Amundson added five digs for the Mariners. All three players also were strong in serve receive for the Mariners even though the Barons' service attempts were limited over the three sets due to Coastal Georgia's offensive efficiency.

The Mariners will be back at home this coming weekend to face Bethel at 7 p.m. Friday and Martin Methodist at 2 p.m. Saturday following the Mariner Fest tailgate festivities which begin at 11 a.m. on campus. Bethel handed the Mariners their only league loss back on Sept. 23. Coastal Georgia defeated Martin Methodist the next day to round out the two-match road swing in Tennessee.
