Columbia, Ky. – The College of Coastal Georgia women's volleyball team went 1-1 for the second straight day as the Mariners finished out play at the Lindsey Wilson College Volleyball Classic on Saturday.
The Mariners defeated Bellevue (Neb.) 3-1 early Saturday afternoon before an immediate turnaround and a match against third-ranked Lindsey Wilson which the Mariners lost 3-0.
On Friday, Coastal Georgia began the new season with a loss to Cumberlands (Ky.) before getting a win over Indiana University East. Both matches were 3-2 decisions.
In its first match on Saturday, the Mariners faced off against a Bellevue squad that also is receiving votes for the national rankings. The Mariners won the opening set 25-18 and dropped the second set by that same score before winning 25-21 and 25-18 to clinch the victory in four sets.
The Mariners had 12 or more kills in all four sets while getting monster matches from Kyra White and Rachel Amundson who combined for 32 kills. White led the team with 17 kills in 24 swings and hit a whopping .667 for the match while Amundson recorded 15 kills in the same number of attacks to hit .500 for the contest.
Cayley Meiners recorded 49 assists for the Mariners.
Alyssa Keeve led a balanced defensive showing with 17 digs while also receiving a team-high 29 serves.
Kayla Gadberry gave the Mariners a solid all-around effort with nine kills, eight digs and 18 receptions.
Against Lindsey Wilson which was 4-0 in its home tournament while dropping just one set, the Mariners fell by set scores of 25-19, 25-18 and 25-19.
Coastal Georgia managed just 30 kills in 96 total attacks while making 15 errors. The Raiders banged out 50 kills against 15 errors in 113 attacks to finish hitting a respectable .310 for the match.
White led the Mariners with nine kills. Ehize Omoghibo followed with seven.
Meiners recorded 25 assists and 11 digs.
The Raiders had six players finish with five or more kills as Yeniffer Ramirez led the team with 12.
Coastal Georgia will hold a team scrimmage at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Howard Coffin Gym on the eve of the first day of classes before playing in a tournament at St. Thomas (Fla.) next weekend.
