Miami Gardens, Fla. - The College of Coastal Georgia women's volleyball team scored one of the biggest wins in progam history here Saturday, clipping No. 2 Missouri Baptist 3-0 in their third match in the St. Thomas Invitational.
However, the Mariners lost their tournament finale to host St. Thomas, which moved to 7-0 for the season with a 3-1 triumph.
Coastal Georgia is now 4-4 after the first two weeks of the season.
In their 2 p.m. match against Missouri Baptist, the Mariners won all three sets by two points - 26-24, 26-24, 25-23 - to get the win.
Coastal Georgia has several wins over ranked teams in its history, but the Mariners had never beaten anyone ranked as high as No. 2.
The Spartans, who also lost Friday to tournament host St. Thomas, dropped to 6-2 on the young campaign with the loss.
Both teams finished with 38 kills, but the Spartans committed 24 attack errors to 16 by the Mariners.
While both teams had similar totals across the board, the Mariners also posted nine total blocks to four by Missouri Baptist.
For Coastal Georgia, Kyra White again was the top attacker with 12 kills in 29 attempts. Rachel Amundson followed with nine kills and Allie Shannon contributed eight.
Cayley Meiners dished out 32 assists and also had three aces.
Coastal Georgia had a balanced defensive effort with Alyssa Keeve recording 11 digs, Tatum Davis followed with nine, Amundson had seven and Madi Bunge notched six.
White posted six block assists for the Mariners. Ehize Omoghibo had both of the team's solo blocks and also had two assisted blocks.
Mallory Dillon led all attackers with 13 kills for the Spartans. Kristina Medanovic followed with 11.
In their final match against St. Thomas, the Mariners and Bobcats split the first two sets. St. Thomas won the opener 25-18 and Coastal Georgia took set two 25-17. St. Thomas would take the third set 25-20 and the fourth set again by 25-20 after climbing back from a large deficit.
Three Mariners had 10 kills each - White, Shannon and Omoghibo - as the team finished with 47 total.
Meiners assisted on 38 kills and also had 10 digs.
Amundson led the Mariners with 15 digs, Keeve followed with 14 and Davis and Madie Bunge recorded 11 each.
The Mariners had seven blocks, getting 14 assisted blocks - all by Shannon, Omogohibo, White and Kayla Gadberry.
Three Bobcats recorded double-digit kill totals as the team registered 58. Carly Durr paced the offense with 17, Shanotta Bawek added 15 and Whitney Battoe had 14.
Dana Nowaczyk assisted on 33 kills while Priscila Ertty recorded 17.
Four St. Thomas players also posted double-digit dig marks with Bawek leading the defense with 17.
Coastal Georgia will play at home for the first time next weekend when it hosts the Mariner Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
