Mariners fall tough at St. Thomas

Miami Gardens, Fla. – The College of Coastal Georgia women's volleyball team made a strong run at knocking off St. Thomas here Saturday afternoon only to drop a five-set decision to the hometown Bobcats.

The 3-2 loss left the Mariners with a 5-10 overall record and a 4-4 mark in the Sun Conference.

St. Thomas, which currently leads the conference race, evened its overall record at 10-10 while staying unbeaten in league play with a 7-0 record.

Coastal Georgia took the opening set 25-23, but saw the Bobcats rally from behind late in the second set before pulling out a 28-26 win to even the match at 1-1.

The Mariners would take the third set 25-21, but St. Thomas stayed alive with a 25-18 win in the fourth set, thus tying the match score at 2-2 and forcing the decisive fifth set.

In the final frame, the Bobcats would outlast the Mariners 15-10 to earn the win.

For the match, the Mariners finished with 64 kills to 55 by the Bobcats but Coastal Georgia had 32 attack errors to just 11 by the home squad.

The Mariners placed four players in double digits for kills including Ehize Omoghibo who had a match-high 23. Kyra White followed with 12 while Alexis Downey and Azure Werner both finished with 10.

Ashley Kot dished out 49 assists over the five sets.

The Bobcats got all but 14 of their 55 total kills from two players as Whitney Battoe and Carly Durr combined for 42 kills. Battoe led the Bobcats with 22 while hitting .373 for the match while Durr finished with 19 while hitting .327.

The Mariners did get a balanced defensive effort while recording 62 digs. Laney Green finished with 26 digs, Kot followed with 15 and Addie Pedraza added 14.

Coastal Georgia will return home to face Southeastern at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Howard Coffin Gym.
