Coastal falls to Southeastern, 3-0

Brunswick, Ga. – The College of Coastal Georgia women's volleyball team dropped a key Sun Conference match here Wednesday night as it fell 3-0 to Southeastern at Howard Coffin Gym.

The matchup was the first of two this season between the Fire and the Mariners who entered the match in third and fourth, respectively, in the league standings as they look to finish among the top four which guarantees a home game in the opening round of the conference tournament next month.

The win lifted the Fire to 17-6 overall and 7-3 in league games as they now sit firmly in the third spot in the league standings.

With the loss, the Mariners dropped to 5-11 overall and 4-5 in the conference which leaves them in a tie for fourth with Keiser in the standings. Keiser defeated Coastal Georgia earlier this season but the teams will face off here next Saturday in their second league matchup.

The Mariners and Fire will play again on Nov. 1 in Lakeland, Fla.

Wednesday's victory was the fourth straight for Southeastern which has also won eight of its last nine.

The loss was the second straight for Coastal Georgia.

The Fire won all three sets by scores of 25-23, 25-22, 25-20.

Coastal Georgia erased an early five-point deficit in the first set and went up by as much as 14-9 only to see the Fire catch them at 20-20 before eventually scoring the final four points after trailing 23-21.

The Fire led most of the way in the second set and also led most of the third set which was close early before the visitors later opened up a five-point cushion at 22-17 on their way to winning the set.

For the match, Coastal Georgia finished with 34 kills to 29 by the Fire but committed 21 attack errors to 11 by the visitors.

Kyra White led the Mariners with 10 kills while Alexis Downey followed with eight. Ashley Kot recorded 29 assists.

Kaity Reed led the Fire with nine kills. Natalie Anderson finished with 23 assists.

Laney Green led the Mariners with 14 digs while Keniah Rivera Santiago led the Fire with 14.

Coastal Georgia will host Webber International at 4 p.m. Saturday. Webber is currently 19-4 overall and 11-1 in league play. The Warriors are second in the league standings behind St. Thomas which is unbeaten in the conference. Coastal Georgia lost 3-2 at Webber on Sept. 20.
