Brunswick, Ga. – The College of Coastal Georgia women's volleyball team picked up perhaps its biggest victory of the season Saturday, clicking to a 3-1 victory over Webber International in a Sun Conference matchup at Howard Coffin Gym.
Looking to be in the top four in the conference standings at the end of the regular season to secure a home match in the opening round of the league tournament, the Mariners took a big step in that direction with the victory over the Warriors.
Coastal Georgia is fourth in the standings, a game ahead of Keiser in the loss column after the Seahawks lost Saturday to Southeastern.
The Mariners (8-11 overall, 7-5 league) and Seahawks will play here next Saturday at 2 p.m. in a key league matchup.
Webber (19-5, 11-2) came here Saturday sitting in second place in the conference with only a loss to St. Thomas which is undefeated in the league.
The Warriors had defeated the Mariners 3-2 last month on their home floor.
But the Mariners reversed their luck this time, winning in four sets. The Mariners won the opening set 25-12 while banging out 11 kills in 22 tries to hit .500 in the stanza as they didn't commit an error.
Webber evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-20 victory in the second set, but the Mariners returned after intermission to win 25-18 in the third set and 25-20 in the fourth for the match win.
"We are so proud of the progress we've made in the last few weeks," said Coastal Georgia coach Leah Mihm. "I think we are finding our groove and we are implementing our game plan for each opponent."
The Mariners began their four-match week with a 3-0 loss at home to Southeastern on Wednesday. They knocked off Florida Memorial and Johnson & Wales Friday in Miami by 3-0 scores before hosting Webber on Saturday.
For the match, the Mariners hammered home 48 kills in 118 attacks with 15 errors to hit .280 for the contest. The Mariners got double-digit kills from Kyra White (13), Alexis Downey (11) and Ehize Omoghibo (10) while Azure Werner added nine.
Ashley Kot finished with 33 assists.
"Kyra and Lexie played out of their minds," Mihm said. "Their consistency and leadership are the cornerstone of our team."
Webber, which got 18 kills from Virginia Salona-Sagapolu, finished with 44 kills and 25 errors in 128 attacks to hit .148 for the contest.
The Mariners finished with 49 digs as Laney Green notched 17 and Addie Pedraza finished with 14.
The Mariners also finished with 8.5 total blocks including four solos. White and Downey had two each. Downey also had three blocks assists while Omoghibo had four.
