Volleyball Falls in Heartbreaker to Southeastern

BRUNSWICK, Ga. – Coastal Georgia volleyball could not overcome the late momentum shift and dropped a close 3-2 (15-25, 25-19, 25-27, 25-23, 15-11) match to Sun Conference leader Southeastern on Wednesday night in Coffin Gym.

Kyra White led the Mariners with 22 kills, while Adair Werley chipped in with 17. Molly Fletcher also added in 11 kills. Ashley Kot made 53 assists. Five Mariners had double-digit digs, with Yorelis Rios Gonzalez having a match-best 32.

Coastal Georgia hit .172 for the match and made 67 kills and 88 digs.

Coastal Georgia came out with a strong first set, hitting .290 (13 kills, 4 errors, 31 total attack) and holding Southeastern to a .029 hitting percentage (8 kills, 7 errors, 35 total attack). A five-point run sparked by Sam Kepler's kill allowed the Mariners to pull away midway through. The Mariners ended the set on a four-point run that included kills from Werley, White, and a pair from Kepler.

Southeastern answered in the second set, as Emily Boehlein's kill was the first of four-straight points that resulted in the Fire going up 18-12. The teams continued to swap points until Hannah Kaszubowski made the set-winning kill to even the match at 1-1.

In a close third set, Southeastern narrowly led for much of the stanza, and did not relinquish the advantage until a Fire error on set point forced a 24-24 tie. After Southeastern gained a one-point advantage on a Mariner miscue, Coastal Georgia rallied for three-straight set-ending points. Alexis Downey's kill even the set at 25-25, while a Downey-Fletcher block on the next point put Coastal Georgia up by one. A kill from Fletcher completed the Mariners' third-set comeback.

The fourth set came down to the wire as well. Coastal Georgia battled back from a late five-point deficit to tie the set at 22-22. White had four of the Mariners' five points during that timely run, including the one that deadlocked the set. Southeastern managed to squeak out the set's final two points on an Abigail Weaver kill and a Coastal Georgia error to force a decisive set five.

A five-point run midway through the fifth set shifted the momentum towards Southeastern. Although Coastal Georgia held off match-point twice, another Mariner miscue ended the match.

Coastal Georgia returns to action on Saturday when the Mariners host Ave Maria at 2 p.m. in Coffin Gym.
