Coastal Georgia Defeats St. Thomas Back-to-Back

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Coastal Georgia Mariners (15-5, 8-1) beat the St. Thomas Bobcats (6-12, 3-6). In the match, Libero Yorelis Rios Gonzalez surpassed her 1000 career digs in less than two full seasons as a Mariner. 


Coastal Georgia and St. Thomas duked it out in what proved to be another intense Sun Conference matchup. Both teams have powerful offensive weapons, and put on a show for all that watched the match. 


The Coastal Georgia offense was led by senior outside Addie Pedraza. She totaled 16 kills a game, career high in three sets and tied her current season-high. Pedraza also maintained a .351 kill percentage, only making three errors on 37 attempts. 


Senior outside Sam Kepler recorded 12 kills in today's match. This ties Kepler season high and sets her career high in three sets. Kepler also maintained a .241. 

Libero Rios Gonzalez was on fire today. Not only did she collect 26 digs, a game-high, but she also surpassed the 1000 dig mark in her career. After today's match Rios Gonzalez has collected 1017 digs in her career as a Mariner. 

Ashley Kot led the Mariners with 33 assists, a game-high. 

Coastal Georgia 3, St. Thomas 0 (26-24, 28-26, 25-21) 
 

Set One: 

The Mariners showed perseverance in the face of adversity, as they were down in both sets one and two before staging momentum filled comebacks. In set one the Mariners spent the majority of the game playing catchup. They were down by three when the Bobcats were just two points away from a first set victory. The Mariners went on a four point run to tie the match at 24-24. Coastal Georgia would close the set with a kill from each outside, Pedraza and Kepler. 

Set Two: 

The Mariners also were down the majority of the second set. St. Thomas led by four points at a maximum. But pushing through in a crunch the Mariners staged another run in the late teens to tie the match at 22-22. The teams then went back and forth point for point, tying at 23-23, 24-24, 25-25 and 26-26 before the Mariners landed two in a row off a block assist from Tamaira Laezza and Alison Muldrow

Set Three: 

The Mariners who had enough of playing with their back to the wall took an early lead in set three. The Bobcats closed the gap at 17-17 leading to another intense finish for the two teams. With the scored tied 21-21 the Mariners went on a four point run to finish the match, 25-21. 

Coastal Georgia is back in action Wednesday October 16 at Warner University. The first serve is slated for 7:00p.m.
