Mariners Beat the Bobcats at Home

BRUNSWICK, Ga. – The Coastal Georgia Mariners (14-5, 7-1) continue their hot streak winning their eighth game in a row. The Mariners took down the St. Thomas University Bobcats (6-11,3-5) in four sets. This victory over the Bobcats was the first over the conference rival in four seasons. 

Senior Addie Pedraza led the Mariners with 12 kills in today's match. She also maintained a .216 hitting percentage. Sophomore Adair Werley, freshman Lillian Carlson and senior Sam Kepler each added seven kills on the day.

Senior Yorelis Rios Gonzalez led the defense with 21 digs, a game-high. She was followed by senior defensive specialist Madie Bunge who collected 12. Ashley Kot led the Mariners with 22 assists.

Coastal Georgia 3, St. Thomas 1 (25-22, 25-19, 20-25, 25-19)

Set One:

Coastal Georgia started the set one with high intensity, as they wear a new target on their backs being first in conference. The two teams battled tight to 15-15 before Coastal Georgia took a three-point lead. A kill by junior middle blocker Alison Muldrow bumped the Mariners to a 21-17 lead. Pushing through the final points, Muldrow sent over a tough serve that the Bobcats just could not handle to win the match 25-22.  

Set Two:

Despite a hot start by the Mariners, the Bobcats closed the deficit and tied the game up 17-17. After three points unanswered by the Bobcats, the Mariners energy forced St. Thomas to take a timeout. At a score of 22-18 the Mariners took a five-point lead after two errors by the Bobcats. An ace from Bunge took the Mariner's to game point and Kepler closed set two with a kill.

Set Three:

Mariners started off set three slower, but the enthusiastic Mariner crowd continued to back them up. Coastal Georgia tried to close the Bobcats lead, Muldrow and Carlson had a great block making the score 7-9. The Bobcats quickly take a five-point lead that the Mariners just could not overcome. With the hot Bobcat's offense, the Mariners could not get the win in set three. They fell 20-25.

Set Four:

Coastal Georia comes back strong scoring the first two points of the set.  The two teams battle in continues to be an intense match. In the late points of the set, the Mariners started a run with a kill from Werley to take the lead 20-19. The Bobcats gave up three crucial points and found themselves down 23-19. The Mariners capitalize on these errors with a kill by Pedraza to take Coastal Georgia to set and match point. St. Thomas did not have enough left in them for a comeback, putting the ball into the net. The Mariners won the set 25-19.

 

The Mariners are back in action this Saturday for another match against St. Thomas University, this time on the road. The first serve is slated for 2:00p.m.
