Natalia Willhelm Heguaburu and Elena Gkiourda also pitched in on the defensive end, combining for 19 digs.
Freshmen Celina Keener and Chantiya Johnson also got in on the mix as they each recorded five kills and combined for eight blocks.
How It Happened:
SET 1: Warner jumped out to a 5-2 run to begin the game and held the lead until a big kill by Sydney Martin broke an 18-18 tie. From there, the Mariners ran away on a 7-2 run to take the first set 25-20.
SET 2: Warner again jumped out to an early lead, taking an 8-4 lead before Paula Perez Rosales recorded three kills in a row to tie the game up at 9. However, back-to-back aces gave the Royals a 12-10 lead that eventually became a 15-11 lead before coach Val Every called a time-out. A Sydney Martin kill out of the timeout gave the Mariners a spark and propelled them to a 14-5 run to close out the second set 25-20.
SET 3: The Royals did not go down without a fight as they rode an early 9-4 lead all the way until the end taking the third set 25-21. A great save by Thamely Santos and Natalia Willhelm Heguaburu, where they both hit balls over their heads as they were careening towards the back wall to save the point, gave the Mariners life. However, Warner was able to counter Coastal Georgia's runs.
SET 4: The Mariners came out ready to close out the game. They jumped out to a 7-4 causing the Royals to take a timeout. Out of the timeout, it was still all Mariners as they went on a 14-9 run to force another Warner timeout before ending the game with a 25-16 victory.
Head Coach Val Every:
"I'm really proud of our girls tonight. We made sure to focus on the details of our game and it really worked out for us. We had three players hit above .200 and it's nice to see our team getting back to its full strength. Our offense did a good job of taking care of business as did our serve-receive, especially in that fourth set, to help us secure the win."
UP NEXT:
Quick turnaround for the Mariners as they will play Southeastern on Wednesday at 7 pm in the Coffin Gym.
