Box Score BRUNSWICK, Ga.- The Coastal Georgia volleyball team (10-15(2-9)) fell to Ave Maria (17-4(9-2)) 3-1 on Saturday afternoon.
The Gyrenes won by scores of 25-23, 25-16 and 25-6 with the Mariners taking the third set 25-23.
Paula Perez Rosales, Sydney Martin and Chantiya Johnson combined for 28 of the team's 37 kills as Rebecca Brown facilitated the offense, recording 32 assists.
Perez Rosales and Thamely Santos led the game with 12 digs each while Natalia Willhelm Heguaburu added 11 of her own.
Elena Gkiourda tacked on five kills of her own and added nine digs.
The Gyrenes were led by Abigail Costlow, Cabriella Bouterse, Zelie Kessler and Madelyn Haut who all finished with 11 or more kills. Kessler recorded a game-high 18 while Bouterse led the team with a .464 hitting percentage.
As a team, Ave Maria hit .343 percent and Lily Witkoski was able to facilitate the efficient offense, putting up 50 assists.
How It Happened:
SET 1: The first set was back and forth all the way with the biggest lead being four by the Gyrenes at the 15-11 mark. With the set tied at 21, Ave Maria was able to go on a 4-2 run to close it out and take the early 1-0 lead.
SET 2: The set started out similar to the first with neither team gaining any momentum. However, after breaking a 6-6 tie, the Gyrenes went on a 9-4 run to cause Coastal Georgia to take a timeout. Out of the timeout, Ave Maria further increased its lead, going on a 6-2 run on its way to taking a 2-0 lead.
SET 3: Coastal Georgia got out to an early 22-11 lead before the Gyrenes rattled off nine straight points to make it a 22-20 game. The Mariners were able to hang on, however, and pushed the game to a fourth set after taking three of the last eight points.
SET 4: This set was all Ave Maria. After jumping out to a 10-4, the Mariners called a timeout to regroup. The Gryenes came out even stronger after the break and went on a 15-2 run to close out the game and improve to 17-4 on the year.

The Mariners will have back-to-back road games on Nov. 2 and 3 against Warner and Ave Maria before coming home to end their season against Keiser.
