Mariners Fall 3-1 to Warner

LAKE WALES, Fla.- The Coastal Georgia volleyball team (10-16(2-10)) fell to Warner (4-20(1-12)) 3-1 on Tuesday night as the Royals celebrated senior day.

Freshman Paula Perez Rosales led the offensive charge for the Mariners, recording 16 kills while also adding seven digs and two blocks.

Middle blockers Sydney Martin and Chantiya Johnson each recorded eight kills while Elena Gkiourda tacked on seven kills of her own.

Johnson and Celina Keener both recorded three blocks to hold down the net while Gkiourda and Thamely Santos recorded 15 digs and 12 digs, respectively.

Setter Rebecca Brown was consistent again, recording 35 assists and adding eight digs.

For the Royals, Gwen Simpson led the way offensively recording 11 kills, and was followed by Aleisha Marcano and Leah Cooley who both finished with nine kills. Setters Maja Auer and Becca Mack combined for 39 assists as they facilitated the offense.

How It Happened:

SET 1: The first set was a back-and-forth affair the whole way. The largest the lead of the set was four by the Mariners at the 11-7 mark. From there, Warner went on a 5-0 run to retake the lead at 12-11 before Coastal Georgia would tie the set back up at 15. The game was tied at 24-24 before Warner scored two quick points to take a 1-0 lead in the game.

SET 2: The Royals rolled over their momentum from the first set and took an early 12-5 lead. The Mariners got the game back within six at the 16-10 mark but a 9-4 run by the Royals allowed them to finish off the set and take a commanding 2-0 lead.

SET 3: The Mariners did not go down easy and jumped out to an 8-3 lead to begin the third set. Warner fought back and got the game within three points multiple times in the set, but the Mariners were able to stop the Royal's runs and muster up one of their own. At the 16-13 mark, the Mariners went on a 9-4 run to close out the set thanks to three Elena Gkiourda kills and two kills by Sydney Martin to force a fourth set.

SET 4: The Mariners again jumped out to an early 8-3 in the set, but the Royals responded with an 8-3 run of their own to tie it at 12. From there, Warner went on a 7-2 run to take a late 19-14 lead. The Mariners answered back and rattled off four unanswered points to bring the set within one and force a Warner timeout. Out of the timeout, Warner regrouped quickly and closed the set on a 5-2 run to take its first conference win of the season.
