Volleyball Prepare for Florida Memorial

BRUNSWICK, Ga.- The Coastal Georgia volleyball team is set to host Florida Memorial University on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 2 p.m. in the Howard Coffin Gym.

The Mariners (6-13, 2-9) are coming off a 1-3 loss to Keiser University last weekend and with three games left, are looking to creep into the Sun Conference Tournament.

The Lions (4-11, 2-9), like the Mariners are coming in off a 1-3 loss to Webber International on Thursday and are on the outside looking in for the SUN Tournament.

HISTORY-

The Mariners lead the series 9-6 all-time, including a dominant 3-0 against the Lions last time they faced. Before that match, however, Florida Memorial had won four straight against the Mariners.

BY THE NUMBERS-
  • The Lions have welcomed back the reigning SUN Player of the Year Caroline Souza after she missed some games early in conference play. She hasn't missed a beat and helped Florida Memorial get a big 3-0 win over Ave Maria last week.
  • To help counter Souza, the Mariners boast the best blocker in the Sun Conference in Chantiya Johnson. Johnson has recorded 70 blocks (1.09 blocks per set) and on multiple occasions recorded a career-high 9.0 blocks.
  • As a team, the Mariners rank second in the SUN for blocks per set with 2.11. If they can get the block established early it is tough sledding for the opposing offense.
  • Cassidy Casey continues her incredibly efficient season, hitting .270 which is tied for fourth best in the SUN.
  • Raevyn Russell continues to put up numbers, averaging 2.97 kills and 3.34 points per set both of which rank fifth in the Sun Conference.
  • The Mariners one-two punch of Sara Hansen and Rebecca Brown have combined for 8.57 assists per set this season while also combining for just over three digs per set.
  • Six different Mariners have 80 or more blocks including Hansen, Brown, Julia Neveu, Kira Matthias, Jenna Rogers and Skylar Gribben.
PATH TO THE POSTSEASON-

The Mariners will need to win two of its next three games while hoping Warner University losses its last two games. The Royals have the tiebreaker over Coastal Georgia and are the only team the Mariners can reach in order to get a spot in the Sun Conference Tournament.
