Mariners Return to SUN Play

BRUNSWICK, Ga.- The Coastal Georgia volleyball team is set to return to Sun Conference play this weekend as they travel to Miami Gardens, Fla. to face Florida Memorial on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 2 p.m.

The last time out for the Mariners (5-7, 1-3) they dominated LaGrange College 3-0 and set season-highs for aces (12) and hitting percentage (.347).

The Lions (3-3, 1-3) on the other, fell to Keiser 3-1 in their last match.

HISTORY-

The Mariners lead the series 8-6 all-time against the Lions. Florida Memorial, however, has had the Mariners number as of late, winning six of the last seven matches and are in the midst of a four-game win streak against Coastal Georgia in which the Mariners have won only one set.

BY THE NUMBERS-
  • The Lions boast one of the best players in the Sun Conference in Caroline Souza. Souza was named the SUN Player of the Year last season and is making a case for it again this year as she leads the conference in kills per set (4.37) and is second in points per set (4.89).
  • Raevyn Russell has been having an exceptional season of her own as she leads the Mariners in both kills per set (2.95) and points per set (3.27).
  • Cassidy Casey has been one of the most efficient hitters in the SUN this season. The junior is hitting .274 percent and is second on the team in kills per set (1.93) and points per set (2.31).
  • Chantiya Johnson leads the team in blocks per set (0.89) and is fourth in the conference. She has been the keeper of the net all season for a Mariners team that is fourth in the SUN for blocks.
  • Paula Perez Rosales missed some time earlier in the season due to illness but seems to be back on track. The sophomore is third on the team in kills per set (1.87) and points per set (2.24) with those numbers expected to climb as she finds her rhythm.
  • Rebecca Brown and Sara Hansen have been a great one-two punch at the setter position all season long as they both have over 150 assists and are combining for 8.67 assists per set.
