Box Score BRUNSWICK, Ga. – The College of Coastal Georgia men's tennis team had a gritty come from behind win against SCAD-Savannah on Wednesday afternoon, grinding out a 4-3 win.
"Great comeback win today by our men against an under-ranked SCAD team that will definitely be in Mobile for the National Tournament this May," said head coach
Zack Rogers.
The #10 ranked Mariners (3-3) were down 1-3 before rallying to a dramatic 4-3 win over a top 20 team in the country.
The day started with #20 SCAD (2-4) taking the doubles point, but CCGA did get a set win from
Lucas Landaluce and
Aymeric Bruno on the #1 doubles line. The Bees rebounded and took the next two lines, giving them a 1-0 early lead going into singles play.
"Lucas and Aymeric played solid doubles at line 1 today, but were not at our best at lines 2 and 3 and SCAD took the doubles point," added Rogers.
On the #1 singles line, Landaluce had a tough draw, facing the #22 ranked tennis player in the country, Danil Ozernoy, losing in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.
Lines two and three were massive for the men as Adrian Guye, the reigning Sun Conference Player of the Week, took down Mark Tryashin 7-5, 7-6(3), and on the third line, Bruno won in convincing fashion, winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-0.
#4 singles saw
Felix Arroyo Viglino drop a close one in straight sets 6-1, 7-5.
On #6 singles,
Santiago Speranza handled Henri Wieber from SCAD in straight sets 6-2, 6-3, setting the stage for a dramatic finish. #5 singles was the last match to finish, and with the score tied 3-3,
Kevin Leuenberger came from behind, after dropping the first set 4-6, winning the final two sets 6-2, 6-4 to pick up a massive point and the win for the Mariners.
"Aymeric won his match at line 3 before half the guys got out of their 1st set, but very quickly we were down 1-3. Santi started the push closing out his match at line 6, then Adrian ended an absolute slugfest at line 2 in a 2nd set tiebreaker. It all came down to Kevin at line 5 who was up 5-1 the 3rd set, but nerves crept in and just like that the 3rd set tightened to 5-4 with Kevin serving. He took a deep breath played big, and locked up our 2nd straight win of the season versus a ranked opponent. We were fortunate to come out on top today, but the guy brought big energy today and earned the win," finished Rogers.
The Mariners are back in action next week when they travel to Hilton Head Island, S.C. to take on Marian. First serve is set for 1:30 p.m.
