Men's Tennis Outlasts Gyrenes to Advance to Semifinals

Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Ga. - In a four hour slugfest, the Coastal Georgia men's tennis team grinded out a 4-3 win over the number four seeded Ave Maria Gyrenes in the first round of the Sun Conference Tournament.

"It was a great win today for our men's team," said head coach Zack Rogers. "There was a lot of emotion with it being senior day and five seniors on the court. We came out and took command early with excellent doubles play at lines 2 and 3. Santi found his form today and won at line 6 in short order. Kevin quickly locked up the 3 point at line 5. Everything was going good and then the heat took its toll on Rico and Felix and the environment quickly changed from what looked like was going to be a 4-0 win to a dogfight locked at 3-3. Adrian Guye stepped up like her has so many times before and closed out the match at line 3 and landed the team back in the semifinals of the conference tournament," continued Rogers.

The match between the Mariners (8-7, 4-3 SUN) and the Gyrenes (5-9, 4-3 SUN) saw three of the six singles matches go to a third set, with Adrien Guye clinching the match just under the four hour mark.

Starting with doubles, the Mariners took the second and third lines to take the doubles point, as Guye and Kevin Leuenberger won the second line 6-2 while Felix Arroyo Viglino and Gonzalo Tano took the third line 6-3.

Moving into singles play, Santiago Speranza was the first to finish at line six, winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 to clinch the second point of the match for the Mariners. Leuenberger was the next to finish at number five singles, winning in straight sets 7-6, 6-2, while Lucas Landaluce couldn't hang on at line one, losing 6-1, 6-3. As the morning moved to the afternoon, and the Mariners needing just one more point to secure the match, Ave Maria turned it on and won the next two sets to tie the match at three a piece. The Gyrenes took the fifth line as Pedro Garcia won due to a retirement from Arroyo Viglino due to cramping. They also took the second line as Tom Alias defeated Aymeric Bruno 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. With the match coming down to number three singles, Guye looked to have the match in hand. He and AJ Duggan had split the first two sets with Guye winning 6-4 before Duggan won the second set 6-2. Guye looked to be in firm control of the third set, and was up as much as 5-1 before Duggan stormed back to make it 5-4. Guye came up big when it mattered and won the next point to secure the 6-4 set victory and the match for the Mariners.

"The guys showed true moxy today and we are looking forward to battling with #3 Keiser tomorrow," finished Rogers.

CCGA will now turn their focus to the number one seeded Keiser Seahawks. First serve is set for Thursday at 10:30 a.m. from the Marta B. Torrey Tennis Complex.
