BRUNSWICK, Ga. – The College of Coastal Georgia women's basketball team fell to a strong University of Rio Grande squad on Saturday afternoon, 109–70, inside Howard Coffin Gym. The Mariners kept pace early before Rio Grande's second-half surge broke the game open.
Coastal Georgia (2–1) hung tough in the first quarter, trailing just 23–20 after ten minutes, but the RedStorm's depth and hot shooting gradually took control. Rio Grande shot an impressive 60.9 percent from the field and outscored the Mariners 62–24 in the paint while holding a 44–37 rebounding advantage.
Junior guard Abby Shepard led the Mariners with 22 points on 8-for-12 shooting, including three three-pointers. Paris Miller added 16 points, going 11-for-16 from the free throw line, and also dished out a team-high four assists. Taylor Blackshear contributed nine points and seven rebounds, while Alli Stone scored eight. Kyla Raven provided a spark off the bench with eight rebounds and five points.
Rio Grande was led by Josie Graves, who scored a game-high 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting. Allie Ellyson chipped in 17 points, and Marina Garcia Perez filled the stat sheet with 11 points, eight assists, and six rebounds.
After a competitive opening quarter, Rio Grande used a 24–12 second period to build a double-digit lead at halftime. The RedStorm carried that momentum into the third, shooting nearly 78 percent from the floor to outscore Coastal Georgia 36–20 in the frame.
Despite the loss, the Mariners continued to battle and will look to bounce back in their next outing.
